Fans of Nineties TV series Due South will be pleased to know the Royal Canadian Mounted Police will be trotting around in their smart red uniforms, while those keen on escaping London for a more salubrious climate might want to visit the Canadian High Commission's pavilion, which will offer free advice on how to study abroad in Canada.

Lessons on the traditional Canadian exercise of yoga (apparently the gyms in Toronto are responsible for its popularisation in the western world) will be held between 3.45pm-4.45pm but if the tree pose isn't your bag there will also be an eight-team street hockey tournament. The puck drops at 10.30am.

Canadian bands playing throughout the day include The Tragically Hip, The Sheepdogs and Jann Arden, while event-within-an-event, Taste of Canada brings plenty of authentic Canadian flavours, with food stall Chunky Chips Wicked Dips serving poutine (that's chips, gravy and cheese curds for the uninitiated) and MeatCure's Burger Shed selling bison burgers — the meat is popular in Canada as a sweeter, lower calorie alternative to beef.

Another food highlight is Canadian chef Marc St. Jaques, from the Auberge du Pommier in Toronto, who will prepare the menu at a Vieux-Québec-themed pop-up restaurant. The menu incorporates traditional Canadian flavours, including grilled lobster, hay-roasted wild boar, maple and whisky ice cream and beaver tails. Yum.

Trafalgar Square, WC2 5DS, Jul 1, 10.30am-10.30pm, free,

Done it a few times... prefer canadian route

I actually just drove the 401 this past weekend to go camping near ottawa (which is basically the same trip, except you turn off around toronto to go to niagara)..
and i definately prefer going through windsor canada over going through the US.
another alternative to crossing in windsor is crossing in port huron (north of Detroit) and taking the 402 to 401.... locals in Detroit always say that port huron is faster to cross the border... its slightly out of the way, but once in canada its a more direct route than the 401 the whole time (it curves down a little between windsor and london)
