London Catacombs Tour

Can I visit any catacombs in London?  September 28, 2012 – 01:51 pm

Yes you can. Kensal Green Cemetery, where Anthony Trollope and Harold Pinter, among others, are buried, houses three catacombs. Two closed off to the public (one was severely damaged during the second world war), but Catacomb B, as it’s called, which sits beneath the Anglican Church on the site, is open. In fact, it’s more than open, for it still has room for 4, 000 more deposits. It is possible to visit the catacomb, which is divided numerically, into six aisles, but advance warning is required.

Otherwise, visit the beautiful site of West Norwood Cemetery. Among the notables calling this plot of land their final resting place is Sir Henry Tate (who established the Tate Gallery), but it’s not just gravestones which attract visitors here. There are Anglican and unconsecrated burial grounds at West Norwood, but there’s a crematorium, a chapel, vaults, memorial gardens and catacombs, too.

The latter, which had a capacity of 3, 500 coffins, opened in 1837 and is situated on the memorial rose garden (the former site of the Episcopalian Church). They are usually closed to the public, but there are occasional openings throughout the year – check the cemetery website. You can do a tour down into the catacombs and learn about their importance and how they were built.

You have to wait for the Open Days to come around, but there are catacombs to visit on the tours held at both Brompton Cemetery near Earl’s Court and at Nunhead Cemetery in south London. These are both small spaces, but they’re worth a look if you can wait.

Take the open bus tour,

Its the bus that takes you to all the touristy spots where you can get on/off when ever you like. Would save you some time find the locations, good photo ops for the short time you're there.
London has a double decker bus also.
Second the d'Orsay and Montmarte, off the side of Montmarte is the artist area with cafes.
Weird, but there is also catacombs you can visit that is full of skulls and bones dating as far back as 1700's. The guards were checking the bags as people leave.
