8 Day London & Edinburgh by Rail, tour London, Edinburgh tour

Scotland’s capital and cultural focus, Edinburgh is a hugely popular UK destination. With its craggy hilltop castle, brooding Holyrood Palace, great shopping and dining, and lively pub and entertainment scene, it’s one of the country’s gems.

Edinburgh is an ideal city for walking, and you get a real sense of the past by following the old town’s back streets and byways. The city center is compact, divided into the medieval town on Castle Hill and the Georgian New Town at the foot of the hill.

There are all kinds of walking tours on offer, from ghostly night walks to a Royal Mile afternoon stroll, revealing the history of this fabled thoroughfare stretching from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood. The tour highlights Edinburgh’s many tales from history, from kings and queens to thieves and scoundrels.

If time is tight, tour Edinburgh on a day trip from London by train. With return train tickets and a Hop-on Hop-off tour included, you can follow your own itinerary.

Explore Edinburgh Castle and see the city from its battlements, shop for tartan scarves along the Royal Mile and Princes Street, visit the National Galleries and tour Holyrood Palace. Pat Greyfriar’s Bobby, visit the new Scottish Parliament and get a taste of Scottish hospitality, whiskey and cuisine in Edinburgh’s famous pubs and bars. The package includes a city map and guide so Edinburgh is your easily accessible oyster for the day.

For a more substantial taste of Scotland from London, spend a bit longer on a three-day rail tour, taking in Edinburgh, Nessie spotting on Loch Ness and a drive through the Highlands to eerie Glen Coe and the delightful town of Pitlochry.
