London: museums, cathedrals, parks

London has great museums: there's an underground war museum if your kids are into that aspect of history; Trafalgar square; the Tate for modern art, even the British Library had a interesting display. There are interesting monuments and lovely parks, if the weather is clement.
Travel by rail makes other modes of transport seem uncivilized. I have fond memories of lovely countryside while in transit and the really cool people in Liverpool. There are tours to the boyhood homes of the Beatles, if you or yours are interested.
I've heard others say Liverpool was "gray" or "depressing" but I thought it was charming
